Skateboarding for Beginners

Skateboarding is many things – an activity, a creative outlet, a style, a culture, a way of life, and so much more. Perhaps more importantly, skating is for everyone. It doesn’t matter how old or how young you are, where you come from, or who you are, there is a type of skateboarding for you. These sessions are open to all ages. All you need is a skateboard and a desire to ride.

This 6-week course introduces beginners to skateboarding as an activity and culture. Beginners will have little to no experience and focus on basics such as pushing, riding, turning, jumping on the board, riding ramps, and learning to ollie, the foundation of street skateboarding (def. a jump performed without the aid of a takeoff ramp, executed by pushing the back foot down on the tail of the board, bringing the board off the ground).

The instructors always begin with technique before moving into applying those techniques with both group and individual instruction.

MANDATORY EQUIPMENT
-> Helmet
-> Street skateboard setup: A street skateboard is required for the course. DO NOT buy the cheaper $20-40 boards available at Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc. They are not made well and will end up being very frustrating for a beginner.
 
***Reach out to the instructor with your child's age, shoe size, height, and weight. He will then provide you with a link to pro street setup in the $50-$75 price range.

RECOMMENDED EQUIPMENT
-> Knee pads
-> Elbow pads
-> Wrist guards

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTORS
Scott Patrick Wiener is a Billerica resident who began skateboarding in 1988 and continues to skate street and miniramp because he just can’t stop. He previously held positions as an art educator at colleges and universities in Massachusetts, YouthBuild USA, an education-based non-profit, and now teaches grade 4-8 art at Hanscom School. Upon discovering the Billerica skatepark, he fell in love and is happy to serve the community in partnership with the Parks and Recreation Department.
