Description
Skateboarding is many things – an activity, a creative outlet, a style, a culture, and so much more. Perhaps more importantly, skating is for everyone. It doesn’t matter who, how old or how young you are, there is a type of skateboarding for you. These sessions are open to all ages. All you need is a skateboard, a helmet, and a desire to ride.
 
These classes are designed to introduce beginners to the activity of skateboarding and will focus on what we call Super Beginners and Regular Beginners. Super beginners focus on the basics: balance, foot placement, pushing and cruising. Regular beginners have a bit more experience and are able to maintain balance, push and cruise. These participants will focus more on tricks, beginning first and foremost with the foundation of all street-skating: the “ollie”. More advanced riders who can already ollie but need some work on skating ledges, platforms, and transition (ramps) are also welcome.
 
The instructor will first focus on technique with all participants before moving into practicing the techniques with one-on-one instruction.

About the Instructor
Scott Patrick Wiener is a Billerica resident who began skateboarding in 1988 and continues to skate street and miniramp because he just can’t stop. He previously held positions as an art educator at colleges and universities in Massachusetts before focusing his career on service with YouthBuild USA, an education-based non-profit that empowers young people to take control of their futures through education, employment and leadership training. Upon discovering the skatepark, he fell in love and is happy to serve the community in partnership with the Recreation Department.
